About us

We are looking for a motivated and customer-focused Business Rates Assistant to join our Local Taxation Team.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the administration, billing, collection and recovery of Business Rates, helping to ensure that vital income is collected efficiently to support local services across Warrington.

As part of a friendly and supportive team, you will work with businesses, members of the public, council colleagues, the Valuation Office Agency, rating agents and other external organisations to provide a high-quality Business Rates service.

The role

The role includes:

Maintaining and updating Business Rates accounts, which includes but is not limited to processing changes in occupation, liability and rateable value, assessing and processing reliefs, exemptions and reductions and processing payments and refunds. Supporting collection and recovery activities, including payment arrangements.

Liaising with the Valuation Office Agency and other external organisations.

Responding to customer enquiries by telephone, email, correspondence and face-to-face.

Maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with data protection and information governance requirements.

Contributing to service improvement initiatives and supporting colleagues through knowledge sharing and teamwork.

What's needed?

We are looking for someone who has experience working in an administrative, financial, revenues, taxation or customer service environment.

  • Has excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Can analyse information, resolve problems and work accurately with detailed records.
  • Is confident using computerised systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Can prioritise workloads and meet deadlines in a busy environment.
  • Is committed to delivering a high-quality service and achieving positive outcomes for customers.
  • Shares our commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and excellent customer care.
  • Experience within a Local Authority Revenues Service or knowledge of Business Rates administration would be advantageous but is not essential.
